PhoneDrop

Drop a file on a small Windows window and it lands on your Android phone. APKs open the installer with one tap.

01 The problem

Getting a file or a test APK from a PC to a phone means cables, adb or a cloud service. For app development and everyday use I wanted it to be one drag.

02 What it does

  • QR pairing, automatic discovery on the local network via mDNS.
  • APK and split-APK installs, folders preserved, phone → PC sharing as well.
  • Self-updating from GitHub Releases, verified against SHA-256 checksums and the signing key.
  • Windows, Android and a macOS menu-bar version; English and Czech.

03 Architecture

  1. 01 Windows.NET 10 WinForms app + CLI
  2. 02 AndroidReceiver in plain Java, no libraries, Android 10+
  3. 03 macOSSwift / SwiftUI menu-bar app
  4. 04 ProtocolDocumented HTTP protocol over the LAN
  5. 05 ReleaseCI and release workflows build every binary

05 How I worked with AI

Three platforms, one protocol. I wrote the protocol document first, so agents working on Windows, Android and macOS each implemented against the same spec rather than against each other's code.

06 What is verified

  • Public, MIT licensed.
  • 8 GitHub releases (v1.0.0 to v1.6.0).
  • Every release built by GitHub Actions.

07 Honest notes

  • No automated test suite yet; tested manually across devices.
